The official name of Bosnia is Bosnia and Herzegovina. This name is the combination of the country’s north region, Bosnia, and the south region, Herzegovina. The population of Bosnia includes Bosnians, Croatians, Serbians and other minority races. Interestingly, these ethnic groups preserve their own language, tradition and culture while living in Bosnia. Most of the Bosnians are Muslims, while Croatians believe in the Roman Catholic Church and Serbians in the Serbian Orthodox Church. Bosnia suffered a civil war from 1992 ~ 1995. However, the country ended the war through the Dayton Accords in 1995, and is now in a peaceful stage. In Mostar city, there is a bridge called the Mostar Bridge, which symbolizes reconciliation among religions. The bridge was once destroyed during the civil war period, but then was rebuilt in 1997. In 2005, the bridge was appointed as UNESCO’s World Heritage. While Sarajevo, the Capital of Bosnia, is known to be the tragic place of starting World War I, it is also known to be the honorable place of opening the 1984 Winter Olympic Games.
